ART BUILDS COMMUNITY
There is no more important thing than for individuals to be in community with others, constructively and with joy. Community is formed when a person connects in a positive way with others. Cultural practices are an important way that individuals make these connections. Visual art enables the artist to build a positive community with others.
Art education has four essential facets:
Equity - provide an inclusive, safe and equitable community-building space for all.
Caring - practice authentic caring, which enables students to participate fully as themselves in community.
Strength - draw upon the strengths of each student to build a resilient and hopeful community.
Knowledge - learning to know and care for ourselves, each other and the world around us.
Three Works from the MFA Boston help illustrate Karl's approach.
